This page is for personal, non-commercial use. P is a general OBD2 diagnostic trouble code that indicates a fault within the fuel delivery system. This code is set once the ECM has detected low fuel pressure at the fuel pressure sensor. Low fuel pressure causes the Check Engine Light to trigger by the ECM and a failsafe mode is enacted to prevent damage until repaired. Once these codes are identified and the freeze frame information looked at for each code they will be cleared. If the Check Engine Light comes on a visual inspection of the fuel tank, fuel lines, and fuel filter will be performed.

Manual fuel pressure readings will then be taken at the fuel rail and compared to specifications. A scan tool will then be used to compare manual readings to what the ECM sees. Though the most common cause is a clogged fuel filter this will not fix all vehicles and circumstances.

It is important to follow the steps so unnecessary repairs are not performed wasting time and money. P can lead to serious drivability issues. If the vehicle starts running poorly and having misfires it must be diagnosed ASAP to ensure safe driving.

If the fuel pump is failing or the fuel filter becomes completely clogged, this may cause the engine to die while driving resulting in serious issues for the driver.

A qualified mechanic should be contacted and repairs should be done to get the vehicle safely back onto the road. A manual fuel pressure tester is needed to diagnose P This allows us to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail and then use the scan tool to check what the fuel pressure sensor is reading. Both of these readings are needed to test the fuel pressure sensor. Some vehicles may not be equipped with an external fuel filter.

These vehicles will only be equipped with the fuel screen that is attached to the fuel pump. These are generally replaced as one unit since the gas tank must be removed from the vehicle in most cases. Care should be taken when test driving a vehicle with a failing fuel pump. If the fuel pump is failing it may do so when driving causing the vehicle to die while driving or not be able to be restarted. Joined Sep 23, What would cause this code? My car currently has this code took it into the dealer and they said they are waiting on a fix from Ford. They believe it is Recall Related. They released the car to me today and said to not drive it more than i have to. Now heres where my problem starts. Based on the Recall and referencing the TSB i do not believe these cases are related. The car does not stall even with AC running. It does start rough but that is simply because its not getting enough fuel.

Tried searching and found nothing related so maybe i have one of the first to have it? Has anyone else? I also have a case escalated through ford right now. Joined Feb 17, Now said:. FordService said:. Hey Now, I'd like to look into this for you.

The last decade of diesel performance hasn't been the easiest for Ford fans wanting to go head-to-head with the competition. Between the extremely complicated HEUI injection system and the Super Duty's performance-hindering weight, Power Stroke owners just couldn't get a break on the street or at events. He's been a Blue Oval loyalist his entire life and knows that a 7.

After owning a '99 7. And after experiencing many of the cooling and head gasket headaches that modified 6. But when Chad heard International planned to build a twin-turbo, common-rail-injected 6. And not only that, he would get power to the ground the old-fashioned way-with a manual transmission.

Then, in the blink of an eye, much of the new Power Stroke's performance potential was discovered using Spartan Diesel Technologies' tuning and a 5-inch MagnaFlow exhaust. And there were no ifs, ands, or buts about what had to be upgraded next-the clutch. Within 30 miles of uploading the tune, Chad told us the stock clutch would slip in Sixth gear, and he knew it would never hold.

But with an even higher horsepower tune in his possession that he desperately wanted to try, South Bend Clutch got the call. Its answer was a dual-disc unit capable of withstanding up to hp.

After that, Chad was able to try out a hp tune, which was also from Spartan Diesel. As you may or may not know, more than 99 percent of 6. Manual versions are not only rare but can handle a lot of horsepower with an aftermarket clutch and are much easier to dyno with. With his truck on the dyno, the River City Diesel guys tried what they called their hp race tune and claimed the truck dyno'd hp and 1, lb-ft.

Not bad for what most would consider basic modifications. To be honest, there isn't a lot done to the rest of the truck, but that's the beauty of it. The 6. Having a truck with great power potential right out of the box came as a pleasant surprise to Chad. Like everyone else on the common-rail bandwagon, Chad's up for anything that's coming down the pipeline for his Ford.

This winter he plans to keep the 6. The job of matching all that extra fuel will be left up to an S over S turbo setup, which is also in the works.

This code is similar to P P may also be seen with codes that case misfires, lean, and rich conditions. P is a OBD2 trouble code that tells us there is high fuel pressure found in the fuel system. This high fuel pressure is detected by the fuel pressure sensor located on the fuel rail. Once the high fuel pressure is detected the ECM causes a Check Engine Light to be seen on the dashboard of the vehicle.

P then causes the vehicle to go into a failsafe mode until normal fuel pressure is detected. Codes will all have their own freeze frame information associated with the code that tells us what specific conditions the vehicle was under when the code was set. Codes will then be cleared and a road test performed, this road test should be under similar circumstances as the freeze frame data for an accurate result. If the Check Engine Light returns during the test drive a visual inspection will be done for the fuel system.

Fuel lines, fuel rail, external fuel filter, and fuel pressure regulator will all be checked. If nothing abnormal is found during the visual inspection, than a mechanical fuel pressure tester will be used to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

This information will be compared to the readings from the fuel pressure sensor to determine any discrepancies. Replacing components without testing them is the most common mistake made during P diagnostic.

P0087 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low

Step by step diagnosis is the easiest way for foolproof answers, not doing so leads to repairs that do not fix the faults and wasted time, effort, and money. P is commonly caused by a kinked fuel line, this is usually due to something hitting the line. The only way to see this is to perform a thorough visual inspection. P can be a serious code but one that is not seen very commonly.

The symptoms listed above make the vehicle unsafe to drive, so you should consult a mechanic as soon as possible before getting back on the road. A P code should be taken seriously when it is found, as it could potentially make the vehicle unsafe to drive.

Joined Nov 18, Hi everyone, I have searched the forum and didn't really find a relative answer so I am posting a question for you all. On my way to Vegas from San Diego with my son last week, the car began to bog down with no power, by the time I made it to the shoulder it would die. I restarted the car which took a while for it to turn over and had power again.

I would make it about a mile or so and it would do it again. I had no idea what it was. I was about miles outside of Vegas and managed to get it to a gas station about 3 miles away. Yes, I did limp it there even know I knew some thing was wrong and it kept dying.

It was degrees at 1pm and I had my son with me and the towing company was 3 hours away due to my location. There were not that many tow companies in the middle of the desert so as you could imagine I was not comfortable having my son sitting in the car in degree heat for 3 hours and also about a foot away from the big rig lane.

The Ford dealer couldn't get my car in before the 4 days I needed to back home by. So at the end of all that, I tried starting it and it turned right over, besides my mind thinking every bump or wind blowing on the car was it losing power it seemed fine.

I ended up chancing the drive back to San Diego and it seems fine. I am not sure if that could have anything to do with overheating, the water temp did seem a little but higher than normal but not sure that would have anything to do with fuel rail pressure.

Any ideas. Ill list all the details below.

I did also remove the tune when I was in Vegas but them put it back in before the trip back to SD. Cleared code with Cobb removed tune drove what appeared to be normal in Vegas, even in the heat up to degrees for short drives. Drove back to SD in the early morning to avoid the heat just in case Drove what appears to be fine ever since and has not thrown the code again since that day. I am going back to Vegas at the end of the month, it will be just as hot and now I am a bit worried about drive.

Since I cleared the code, im sure if I take it to the dealer they are going to charge me an arm and a leg just to look at it when there is no code.
